THIS IS THE SWEETEST BLOODY THING. It's so precious and fun and quirky in that way of "things that develop between friends that are really hard to explain to the outside" rather than pasted on and feeling fake. I have not watched canon myself, so I think if you at least know the characters from fandom osmosis that should be enough to enjoy this fic!

Hermione was eight when she summoned her first demon. She was lonely. He asked what she wanted, and she said a friend to have tea parties with. It confused him a lot. But that wasn’t going to stop him from striking a promising deal with the young witch.

The only complaint I have about this fic is that it only covers first year & the author has no plans to continue it beyond the general summary of the subsequent years they posted as an epilogue. I LOVE this. I don't think the dead dove tag is particularly apt, but it DOES definitely contain violence and bloodthirstiness as you'd expect from a fic where demons are prominent characters. It's. Well, it's basically everything I want in HP fic, where Hermione is the main character and definitely dark and there's a whole bunch of fun lore beyond what was in the books. :D demons! Deeeeeemooooons. :D I think this is readable with basic fannish osmosis.

This is a bloody fantastic canon AU where Mr. Rochester dies in the fire and Jane is tasked with taking care of his secret wife in the aftermath. The style is very close to the original, and I love how it forces both Jane and the readers to see Bertha's side of the story. Definitely a fic where you'd want to know canon!

This is such a lovely owl-POV fic. I adore Hedwig and her care for Harry! This was written decades ago, and it's always delightful to see how fanfic style has changed. Probably more fun if you know at least a bit of canon, whether books or movies.

Summary: This was why Hobbits did not leave the shelter of the Shire. The world outside was a Dark place where you would only starve and starve until you broke, until it would be all that remained, like in the Wandering Days, like in the Dark Days.

This is some delightful horror (which then evolves into action/adventure). I love the visceral descriptions of Bilbo's hunger, and the whole premise is really cool and creepy. This is probably just fine with fannish osmosis levels of canon knowledge.

This is delightfully creepy, all the more so because it feels so frighteningly plausible! You'll want quite a lot of background canon knowledge for this.

An AU in which Rizzo is actually a lesbian, Sandy never met Danny at the beach that summer, and Sandy comes to a personal realization about herself (and Rizzo).

I bloody love this. That moment of "!! wait, girls date other girls?" revelation is soooo relatable! I love Sandy's kind and open naïveté, and Rizzo's determination not to let her stay naïve, and the Pink Ladies' protectiveness of Rizzo. I think this fic is a lot more fun if you know canon, but also perfectly readable as a sweet 50s era high school lesbian romance!
