Snowflake Challenge: A mug of coffee or hot chocolate with a snowflake shaped gingerbread cookie perched on the rim sits nestled amidst a softly bunched blanket. A few dried orange slices sit next to it.

Challenge #12: Make an appreciation post to those who enhance your fandom life.

If you've ever stopped by to talk to me about rarepairs or favorite characters or niche AUs, here or on Discord or Tumblr or in the AO3 comments, thank you! You're the reason I've written as much as I have. (I'd still write for those rarepairs/rare characters/AUs, but knowing I'm writing for someone makes it that much more fun.)

If you followed me over here to Dreamwidth because I would not stop talking about it everywhere else, welcome :D I'm really glad you're here and gave it a shot. And if you've been on Dreamwidth way longer than I have, thank you for being here! It's my favorite place on the internet, and I'm enjoying it so much.

And if you write fic, or meta, or make art or moodboards or memes or anything else fandom-adjacent, you're the reason I got into fandom in the first place, so thank you! I've had a great time here and I'm looking forward to sticking around for a long time. I hope you do too. <3

Challenge #11: In your own space, grant someone's wish from Challenge #5.

I've been granting wishes since Challenge #5, but unfortunately I did not closely track any of them! So you're just going to have to take my word for it that I did this one. ;)

But I will throw an invite out here, since I now have a working computer and can type AO3 comments without extended frustration and probably missed a few "please comment" wishes: if you have a specific fic you'd really like a comment on, drop it here and I'll check it out! Obviously I have my favorite fandoms, but I'll read canon-blind or original work.

ICE OUT of museums!

In preparation for the big strike against ICE's invasion of Minnesota tomorrow, I saw a post on threat saying that Dream Museum 1 and Second-Tier Museum 10 were closing tomorrow in solidarity.[^1] So I checked all the rest. Dream Museums 1 and 2 are closed tomorrow in solidarity. Second-Tier Museums 1-4 and 6-10 are closed tomorrow in solidarity. Second-Tier Museum 5 is closed from the 21st to the 24th for exhibit installation, while they are closed tomorrow, it's not necessarily in solidarity. It's also not necessarily not in solidarity, so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt (for now), while also keeping my eye on them.

[^1] For those of you where are new here: I made the list of Dream Museums 1 and 2 and Second-Tier Museums 1-10 so I can talk about my ongoing job search without actually identifying any of the museums I'm applying to work at.

Challenge #10: Big Mood (Board): CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND CREATE A MINI MOOD COLLECTION OF THREE (or more) ITEMS THAT EVOKE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT IT. You don’t have to limit yourself to visual media, or collect the items into a special format like a square (though you can if you’d like).

I've never made a moodboard for a published fic in my life, but apparently for some reason I decided it was time to learn how to use Canva and also how to put stock photos and cropped canon art into pretty patterns. So...have a moodboard for Sonata in F You, my longest Ace Attorney fic and also my favorite.

Well, there's flu in my mother's residence and she's recovering from a cold (though says she tested negative for flu and COVID), so the weekend visit with friends is canceled because they can't risk me bringing anything into their space, and the weekdays visit with other friends was already severely cut down because of recent stresses in their lives but now is further reduced to just meeting up for a short walk because they can't risk it either. I do not like this timeline.

(To be clear, I absolutely understand all my friends' reasons and I'm glad they made the calls that are right for them! And we've all planned to see each other when I hope to come down again in April. I'm just sad not to see them 1. at all 2. much now. also I was hoping 1 would want to watch HR with me)

On the other hand, this means I'll be going home before a big storm hits this weekend, which if I'd kept my original schedule might otherwise have ended up delaying me for an extra day, which would then make things tight at home because we're planning to go to Montreal right after I get back. Everything happens for the tolerable in this not yet the shittiest of all possible worlds.

Wow, I only made one post last year? I'm here every day, reading, so I keep up with anyone still posting here.

I didn't put up the Yuletide polls this year. Just didn't have the oomph. It's been an oomph-sapping kind of year or so, hasn't it? (Fuck me -- just looked it up, and it's literally the one-year anniversary of that shitbag's inaguration.)

ANYWAY. Fun stuff. Things I have posted since...a while ago.

I'm in Massachusetts visiting friends and family, and the US border guard was even brusquer and more unfriendly than the one the last time I crossed the border. They used to be reliably genial-while-professional, and now they're barking grumpy questions at me -- and I'm a white English-speaking US citizen with a NEXUS card (pre-screened, "trusted traveler"). A Canadian friend who drove across the border last year said that guards were going down the line of cars waiting to approach the booth and pulling people out to interrogate them on the side of the road, and who'd a thunk it, everyone they pulled out was brown. (When I crossed yesterday, I was the only car in sight, which I'd love to think was because Canadian travel to the US is way down, but probably had more to do with the extremely bad weather forecast that day. I managed to get south of the storm band before it hit, though.)

My obsession with Heated Rivalry continues, though I'm trying hard not to be That Fan at people. I have successfully recommended it to two board members at my church 😈 A friend I'll spend a week with this summer wants to watch it with me then, so I have that to look forward to, and there's a chance I'll get to watch it with other friends this weekend, if they're interested. Meanwhile I'm reading a lot of fic, but also freely DNFing anything that isn't working for me, whether for characterization or bad grammar or spelling it "Rosanov."

["Why, oh why, do people keep incorrectly capitalizing dialog-tag fragments like this?" She wailed. -- I mean, I know why they do it: because autocorrect sees the punctuation ending the quotation and thinks the dialog tag is a new sentence, and the writer is foolishly trusting autocorrect over the evidence of every published text they've ever read. But it drives me nuts; my sense of the flow and pacing of a sentence is very much guided by its punctuation, and this is like hitting a pothole every time.]

Geoff and I have started the new season of The Pitt, and certainly I'm liking it so far! It's interesting how much less chaotic the ER seems than it was in the first couple episodes of the first season. I'm very curious about all the characters they've introduced (and about where Mateo, the World's Hottest Nurse™️, is), and I love seeing Whitaker now a fully qualified MD with his own little ducklings following him around. (Is he still living with Santos?) I don't see an overarching plot yet other than "just how suicidal is Dr. Robby?" but/and I'm looking forward to seeing where it's going.

Yesterday, I finished reading Beggars and Choosers by Nancy Kress, the sequel to Beggars in Spain. I enjoyed this book and found it engaging enough that the problems I had with Beggars in Spain no longer bother me.

As I noted in my reaction to Beggars in Spain, given the power of the other genetic modifications on the Sleepless, the lack of a need to sleep seems almost like an afterthought. Apparently Kress realized this as well, because in this book, humanity is divided into four groups (listed here in decreasing order of genetic modification):

  1. Super-sleepless (AKA Supers)
  2. Sleepless
  3. Donkeys
  4. Livers[^1]

The Sleepless are pretty much written out of the story — most of them are in prison by this point, and the ones who aren't are pretty much helpless to affect the course of the story. The Sleepless are still necessary to the overall arc of the story, though, as without them there would be no Super-sleepless.

I think the problems that I still have with both this book and with Beggars in Spain come down to them being the first two parts of a trilogy where the parts are pretty much inseparable[^2]. Looking back from Beggars and Choosers, Beggars in Spain becomes sort of a prologue ("I told you that story so I can tell you this one..."). I don't really feel like it would be possible to tell the story of Beggars and Choosers without having told Beggars in Spain first — there's simply too much to try to squeeze it all into early chapters and/or memories. At the same time, Beggars and Choosers suffers from "second book of a trilogy" disease: it doesn't end so much as just stops.

Also, I'd like to remind/inform you: I keep a list of links to the monthly logs of books that I read at this sticky post, and the monthly logs contain links to the reactions I've written. If you see a book title without a link, it means I haven't written a reaction to that book, but if you'd like to hear what I thought about it, leave a comment and I'll write a reaction!

[^1] I think "Livers" in this context is rather an awkward word — my mind immediately went to the organ, but instead it's formed from the very "to live."

[^2] It seems like there ought to be one word for "three stories told in three consecutive books which share the same world and characters" and another word for "one story split into three books because of the limitations of bookbinding and/or the nature of the publishing industry," instead of using "trilogy" for both.

Snowflake Challenge 2026: Prompt 9

autobotscoutriella: Klavier Gavin and Daryan Crescend in silhouette, from the concert at the beginning of Turnabout Serenade (gavinners)
[personal profile] autobotscoutriella
Snowflake Challenge: A mug of coffee or hot chocolate with a snowflake shaped gingerbread cookie perched on the rim sits nestled amidst a softly bunched blanket. A few dried orange slices sit next to it.

Challenge #9: Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

Listen, I'm not saying I have an extremely specific preference for ships between two very competent characters*, both a little bit abrasive but one a lot more blunt about it than the other**, with a professional connection in which one technically outranks the other and there's potential for a right-hand-man dynamic even if canon doesn't deliver***, at least one of them canonically has a really baffling career progression****, if they're human it's going to be some variation on blond/brunette and if they're robots their colors contrast similarly, and their backstories are vague enough I can work some kind of long-term personal connection between them into my headcanons if that's not actually canon - and also it's a rarepair, at least one of the characters involved has a much more popular (sometimes canon) ship with a different character, and at least one of the characters involved frequently gets underestimated/underused/forgotten by both canon and fandom.

I'm just saying it's weird that it happened to me four times.

And I didn't even notice until I was lining up a bunch of my favorite ships and went "...huh." Sure, some of it is headcanon because a lot of the characters involved are also underdeveloped, but if I'm coming up with similar headcanons for all of them, I think there's something there! It's so specific I don't think it even counts as a trope. Birds of a Feather + Right-Hand Man + a touch of Opposites Attract except they're not really that different, one just hides it better + Competence Kink + uh, whatever the trope name is for contrasting colors but specifically not red/blue?

*Look, I know popular Ace Attorney fanon is that Daryan's an idiot, but he's pretty clearly canonically not. He makes bad decisions under pressure, which is a different problem. He keeps up with Klavier fine.

**I think Ema and Franziska can match each other's abrasiveness beat for beat, but I know which of them I'd rather be locked in a car with for three hours.

***Did Transformers canon give me the Carly-and-Mikaela teamup it should have? Not even a little bit. But the compatible skillsets are there. Official diplomat/team mechanic is great, actually.

****Does any piece of Transformers canon manage to be consistent about what Elita's actual rank is, let alone Chromia's?

Challenge #9

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

Honestly, trope doesn't entirely resonate. I can remember years ago, seeing something about tropes and just not relating to any of all that forced to share a bed/enemies to lovers/coffee shop AU stuff. But I do have a theme, which is alternate timelines. What if So and so never died? What if the villain made the obvious choice that the original writers seem to have somehow totally missed? What if Character X was the one to move from his cancelled spinoff to the main show? I have done them all.

The first series I ever saw to completion was Once Upon a Time, where Jafar was the one to move across from the Wonderland spinoff to the main show (imagine his lamp ending up in Gold's shop and Zelena accidentally letting him out). Another one was The Flash, where Eobard manipulated Nora into giving Barry the metahuman cure and the finale showed a dystopian 2049 that resulted from this (at the time I started that, I was convinced that was the route canon was going to take; to this day, I still don't get why the writers wasted time on Cicada rather than pursuing this route and just letting Eobard be the bad guy). I've saved Sun, Jin and Sayid on Lost several times over (and after a prompt in last year's three sentence ficathon, I was even tempted to expand on my attempt at Smokey McSmokeFace going back to the classical Roman era to get off the island while he was still human).

And yes, I have a few ongoing such works which I'm determined to finish. The School Spirits one where Mr Martin chooses to possess Emilio instead and the impact this has on Charley and Yuri is barely started (the upcoming new season may help with that), and I am determined I will push past my mental block on a) the Lost series where Sun joined the others in 1977 (I lost heart after the decision in canon to kill her off, which I still strongly disagree with 15 years on) and b) the Dark series where Ulrich successfully rescues Mikkel from 1986 (at this rate, I think I'm actually going to end up going down the Choose Your Own Adventure route, one where Ulrich and Mikkel get their happy ending and the minimum of characters are erased from existence, and one where Claudia gets hers.)

An attempt at returning to posting cause I failed the last days doing the things I wanted.

First off the Animal Crossing update is live and I managed to find my game to go on it. It’s been so long I’ve honestly forgotten some of the stuff (I need to look up gyroid fragments cause I’ve honestly forgot what they were) but it has been good going back on it. I’m glad there’s new Splatoon and Zelda items and I’ve been slowly ordering the latter, I now have majora’s mask on which was always my go to think to wear. And I’m so glad for the storage increase so I can clear stuff up. I might redo some parts of my island (it’s currently a mass of flowers) but I’m not sure what I’ll do yet.

As for the new stuff I like the hotel and the tourists wandering around the island is a cute idea. I’m just worried that it won’t be enough to keep long interest (I think there’s only 8 rooms in the hotel to design plus a vip). Maybe there’s other secret features and a long list of items to get from there but…

Thursday night had a Resident Evil showcase which felt too short and kinda pointless. Two of the big things, a Resident Evil concert and amiibo weee met with ‘more info on those soon’. They didn’t even confirm what the amiibo would be (I’m assuming Leon and Grace but..). I am tempted to get game on switch 2 cause if that though once there’s confirmation.

Friday announced the new Lego set finally, the final battle with ganon from ocarina if time. It’s a smart move and looks nice (especially Ganondorf) but I wish there was some of the castle.

In an attempt to distract myself I built the Lego set I got from the sale before new year, which came Tuesday, it was the animal crossing dodo airlines set. It’s like most of the AC sets, annoyingly simple, but the plane is really nice. I just wish it had both of the dodos instead of just the pilot.

Yesterday was a town trip to the cinema. The stuff I’d hoped to do in town was mostly a failure, Tesco didn’t have stuff I was going to get, the Christmas Lego in game I saw in game Tuesday was already gone, smiths still didn’t have stranger things stickers. (Have they really underestimated demand or is distribution terrible?)

On the plus side Smyths did get the Dustin Funko in so I was able to get him (my face when I saw he’d come back in stock the other day I was so glad) and I did get my click and collect from Primark (a tee and jacket) so that was a plus.

(And on the ither plus side there was a cute lil squirrel at the bank by the station)

At the cinema there was a poster for Cold Storage whcih made me squee a bit. I’m so seeing that on release day. Plus the cinema is getting Iron Lung! I hope they add extra times (same for Return To Silent Hill this week) but hopefully I can see it.

Trailers were a few I’d not seen before.
Hoppers: a new trailer showing more of what it’s about, so I’m a bit more curious
Goat: felt too short to form an opinion
Stitch Head: looks really cute, made me laugh
Kangaroo: made me squee cause kangaroo
Looney Tunes The Day The Earth Blew Up: !!! Looney Tunes on the big screen and out the same day I’m gonna be seeing cold storage?? Please have showings that don’t clash.

Thoughts on films (The Boy And The Heron and Labyrinth under the cut)

After the cinema I went one stop extra on the train to go to the outlet cause I had a birthday code that needed using at the Lindt store (I had till today to use it which was annoying) the. I just came home and flopped.

I did manage to watch the first ep of Seven Dials before tiredness and headache set in. It was really good though it is strange seeing an Agatha Christie adaption after I’ve read the book (with the others I read last year most were Poirot’s that I’d seen the eps of) so it was strange to hear names and go ‘ah! Them!’ There has been a few changes so I am curious what else it’ll do. But so far it seems reallly good.

Also yeaterday the gingerbread Lego AT-AT came, which had been meant to be a Christmas present. I probably would’ve left it a few days but mums friend is coming tomorrow and as it was a joint thing with her and mum I figured I should do it today. It looks nice and it is different. I feel because of how fast it sold out (and stayed that way) that there’ll do another gingerbread Lego thing this year but what I dunno.

This week there’s mums annoying friend coming tomorrow then Friday is Return To Silent Hill (but only if they add a better time I don’t wanna miss the traitors finale) and then I wanna finally watch Seeds Of Doom in the weekend. But we’ll see.

Snowflake Challenge: A flatlay of a snowflake shaped shortbread cake, a mug with coffee, and a string of holiday lights on top of a rustic napkin.

Challenge #8

Talk about your creative process.

This is actually something that I've been wondering if I need to improve on, especially when it comes to writing series. Specifically, how much of a series I should have planned out before I start posting it, although admittedly there have been a few times where I've intended something as a one-shot and then realised that actually I can't really leave the story where it is.

Also, this is a process specifically to Dark more than any of my other fandoms, but I realised I should probably make sure I have a full understanding of the original timeline before I try to change it. A moment of sheer frustration at Ulrich getting stuck in 1953 and being unable to rescue Mikkel from 1986 led me to write a scene where Ulrich did get to 1986, and it became clear I couldn't just leave it there. But at that point in season 1, I didn't have the whole context of how that whole family tree/timeline worked, or the reasons why the character Claudia just would not let the timeline deviate that way. So I now find myself with an ending I know has to happen, but that I was trying to avoid and that's just blocking me finishing the final chapter. Anyone remember those Choose Your Own Adventure books as kids? I'm seriously thinking about those now as I'm tempted to write the one ending where Claudia fixes the timeline her way or trying to work out if there's any way of incorporating the alternate universe characters into the timeline so the minimum of people actually get erased from existence and Ulrich and Mikkel get their happy ending.

Something I have often done is been determined to get a fic finished before the next episode of a show aired and canon could contradict it. This tends to be easier with one shots than series, although I've only ever had one dickhead trying to "correct" me over not incorporating context that hadn't aired at the time that chapter was posted. But since that was a known troll, they could shove their corrections where the sun didn't shine. If that does come up, I don't rewrite.

Sometimes it involves going back and watching old episodes, or even just checking facts on fandom wikis, to make sure I have my details correct. (Even if I sometimes wonder why I bother - for example, I was trying to find out whether Fringe's Peter Bishop's specific date of birth was ever confirmed, to see if it was feasible for a time travelling Daniel from Lost to have met Walter before Peter was born to give him the name. In the process, I managed to establish that Walter's father's date of death in 1944 doesn't make sense for Walter's birth in 1946, so decided that if the writers weren't going to worry about that, I'd roll with my idea whatever!)

As far as requests go, if I'm not doing it as part of an exchange, I'll only consider if we've interacted. Just my way of making sure I don't end up granting a request for aforementioned known troll, whose MO was to ask for requests then spam anyone who didn't take their (very specific) requests with insults.

But anyway, what I'm wondering if I need to do is try and do more planning in advance of any story likely to become a series before I start posting it. I have one now I'm trying to work out (School Spirits, a rewrite of season 2 where Mr Martin possesses someone other than who he actually does possess in canon) so I'm going to start with that.

A. and I have been watching High Potential and enjoying it very much. Today I decided I wanted to try writing a High Potential fanfic. So I went to AO3 to see what the big ships are, what the major tropes are, and so forth, so as not to jump into the fandom totally blind.

Of course the big ship is Morgan/Karadec, because they're partners on the show and we're supposed to interpret their differences as "opposites attract" and to want them to get together. But I just don't see it.

The second big ship is Morgan/Soto, which I find somewhat more plausible than Morgan/Karadec, except for the fact that Morgan appears to be so incorrigibly heterosexual as to render it impossible.

A few people shipped the canon ship Morgan/Tom, which I suppose could work, but I didn't find them to be a very interesting couple, and also he left town just as they were starting to get together. I suppose someone could do a fix-it fic to get them back together, but really I thought they were such a borin couple that I wouldn't even bother putting in the effort.

Which brings us to my favorite ship of the show: Morgan/Oz is a ship that's never going to happen in canon, but I think they'd make a good couple, and it'd be a more interesting ship than any of the above. Which is why at the time I started writing this post, there were 271 High Potential fics on AO3, of which exactly one was tagged Morgan/Oz: mine, in which Morgan and Oz are talking in bed, discussing how if their life were a TV show, the fanfic writers would ship Morgan and Karadec and they'd be totally wrong to do so. 😂

QOTD: On limitations in art

Jan. 17th, 2026 11:24 am
brithistorian: (Default)
[personal profile] brithistorian

I am reminded of a statement by the former mayor of Bogotá, Antanas Mockus, a politician who employed artistic strategies in his office: "When an artist goes to prison, they take a piece of chalk and draw a line some centimetres from the wall to define their space, so they can have a bit more restrictions (sic). But by making those restrictions they in fact liberate themselves." A line can be a border and simultaneously an assertion of freedom. Being able to decide on your own limits, your strengths and weaknesses, is always empowering, offering a certain degree of sovereignty even in the direst situation.

Joanna Warsza, "Open Mic: Joanna Warsza on the Art of Open Group," *Artforum," October 2025, p. 110.

I've been thinking about this since I read it an hour or so ago. I think the quote from Mockus helped Warsza to set up for presenting her idea, but I don't think Mockus (at least as presented in this quote or — as I think is likely — in this translation of his quote) appears to quite understand what was going on in those prison cells. I don't think the artists wanted to "have a bit more restrictions (sic)," but instead, as Warsza put it, to "decide on [their] own limits."

When I was younger and studying poetry in school[^1], I never really understood why someone would choose to write poetry once prose had been invented, which seemed to me to be a superior method for conveying ideas. It's only later, as I learned more and started producing art of my own, that I learned the potential value of working within a set of restrictions, whether self-imposed or those of a traditional form. And looking back, I wonder if this value of restriction is something that my teachers could have explained to me, or if it's something that I had to figure out on my own in order to understand it.

[^1] Confession: I never really liked or (apparently) understood poetry.

2. I’m funny. For a while I worried that my humor was too off-the-cuff, and I couldn’t translate it into writing. But that’s not true! I rather enjoy reading my own stuff and LOL-ing at my occasionally frequently juvenile jokes.

3. I say the thing that everyone’s thinking but is afraid to verbalize. When I was younger, I was too blunt, and this honesty was often off-putting. As I matured, I learned to leaven the truth with humor, to manage my tone, to not make it a personal attack, which really, really helps.

Challenge #8: Creative Process

Rather than get into the weeds of my process, which aren’t that interesting, including to me, I’ll just say that, at a macro-level, what most drives my writing process is that when I draft something and determine it’s worth pursuing, I finish it. Once I broke my two-decade plus writing drought, the third piece of fanfic I wrote was a 86K word novel. Did it receive any comments or kudos as I posted it, chapter-by-chapter? Not really. But by god I was going to finish it. Not just finish it, but edit it structurally so that it flowed better. One of the last pieces of fanfic I wrote was an even longer, Nancy Wheeler from ST story which had a very limited audience and required a whole lot of research. Didn’t matter. I *needed* to get closure on it before I could start writing original fiction and apply to graduate school.

This is helping me now that I’ve transferred my creative energy from fanfic to original fiction. Folks, writing a novel is a giant fucking pain in the ass that I do not recommend. And unlike fanfic, I have no guarantees that someone will eventually read it and love it.* Having practice finishing large projects is very helpful (“I know I can do this!”), as is my bull-headed** determination to cross an item off my to-do list.

(For me!) finishing a project is one of the best ways to learn and improve. The sense of satisfaction! The confidence boost! Unparalleled.

* Which eventually happened with both my fanfic novels. Not many people, but I write for niche audiences. :P

** Did I mention that I’m a Taurus and was born in the year of the ox?

Challenge #8: Talk about your creative process.

Ah, my creative process! A thing that is definitely not at all comparable to herding a pack of several dozen rabid plot bunnies!
