Story: to call myself beloved

Author adds: Please heed the tags – major character death, discussions about bereavement etc. But it’s done softly. Soft angst.
Other: Achingly beautiful. Joe has continued living after Nicky's death, made a new life for himself. But through the eyes of a student, we see again his love, and how/why he keeps going forward. Be prepared to at least sniffle, and maybe outright cry.

Nothing hurried, here; it’s a gentle, feel-good story with excellent characterization, sweet and engaging, just the thing to fill a lazy afternoon.

Author Summary: Five-year-old Harry accompanies the Dursleys on a Business trip to Stark International, where an industrial accident kills all of Harry's living relatives. A very different Harry goes to Hogwarts.
Other: The Dursleys are in a Stark facility when they’re killed. Tony Stark adopts Harry, which changes his as well as Harry’s life. As the author says in her notes: “This Harry is not the compliant little protoweapon of canon. He has been exposed to the Heroes, Gods, Mutants, Magic users and all the men and women of mystery that the Marvel Universe has to offer. Needless to say Hogwarts and the British Wizarding Society may not know what hit it.”
I know very little of the Marvel Universe, but this crossover kept me absolutely riveted. By the time Harry goes to Hogwarts, he’s a very self-confident young man, not about to fall in line with “the way things are done” if they don't make sense to him. Refuses to answer to “Potter” (he’s a Stark, thankyouverymuch), brings tech that Tony Stark engineered to work around magic -- powered by the ambient magic floating around -- and already has a strong foundation in non-wizarding magic. He's sorted into Ravenclaw, makes friends across all the houses, institutes “anyone is welcome” study groups -- and generally leaves the professors reeling because he hasn’t done anything wrong, but it’s all so outside their expectations. Perhaps worse -- in Dumbledore’s view -- his attitude of “let’s do it the sensible way instead of the traditional way” starts infecting some of the other students.
The technical aspects of the writing -- grammar and punctuation, some spelling -- are somewhat lacking (though not the worst I’ve seen, by any means). But the concept is so innovative, and the author uses her knowledge of HP and MCU so well that it doesn’t matter. A Harry who grew up with magic use and Tony Stark’s tech is mentally flexible enough to experiment with ways to integrate them further, in ways that neither his father nor the Hogwarts professors could have anticipated. I’m disappointed that the story will probably never be finished, but the author takes us through the end of Fourth Year, and it was a great ride while it lasted.
