This author explains the variations in her author's notes, then her story takes us through the years of how its use changes between Joe and Nicky till it does mean exactly that -- except... well, I won't spoil it. Just, you gotta read; it's short, and absolutely delightful.

She’s sitting on the ground, back against the trunk of a big oak, and Joe’s sprawled next to her – predictably – napping. Nicky and Andy are arguing over the proper way to roast corn on open fire, and as amusing as it was for the first fifteen minutes Nile finds her focus wandering. Joe hums, without opening his eyes. “I’m not always asleep, sometimes I’m just relaxing.” Or the one wherein Joe takes a lot of naps and the whole team gets to relax.
Other: Another story of “Nile integrating into the team.” I love comfortable slice-of-life stories, with team as family enjoying downtime, and this is just absolutely *chef’s kiss* delightful. It gave me a peaceful feeling -- the sensation is one of lying on a gently-lapping lake, just basking in the summer, listening to birdsong and cicada beat. (I'm resolutely ignoring that the reality of that image would burn me to a lobster-red crisp; it's the thought that counts.) Just total sweetness.

Author Summary: Sometimes, it just gets a bit too much. Silence is Nicky’s way of dealing with things.
Other: More “Nile integrating into the team” as they recover in a secluded safe-house and deal with the changes in their lives. It’s a gentle slice-of-life from Joe’s POV that meanders through history, art, philosophy, humor, and general team-bonding. I’m a little biased (note below), but it’s well worth a read -- or a re-read, as I’ve just discovered. Now that I’ve seen the movie, I noticed a couple of in-jokes, very snicker-worthy, and a few lines that I thought were ‘casual’ resonate from the movie and have a lot more depth.

This story was my intro to TOG fandom. Castalie and I go way back; I beta’d her stories in The Sentinel fandom. When she asked me to beta a story for a movie I hadn’t seen, I had no concerns. Castalie writes with so much heart and empathy, and remains so true to the characters, that all I need to do is help with the language. But -- re: ‘heart and empathy’ -- this single story made me fall in love with The Old Guard. I’ve since watched the movie “many times” (<g>), produced a 50-page transcript, and now I’m trying to read All. The. Fic! But even after a hundred or so fics now under my belt, this story still shines.
