Let's start with a story that really shows what fanfic can do. I don't think you need to know much about Superman or DC comics verse to enjoy this story.

I am still reading everything in the Rusty Quill Gaming verse as fast as ducking spoilers will allow. While not the largest fandom on Ao3, I think we have some of the best authors. While context enriches this story, you don't need to know to much to enjoy Gruff Leader Zolf getting comforted by Sweet Hamid due to airsickness.

Oh my, pals. Pals. I've read so much good fic this week. Where do I even start.

I don't think you need to know canon for the TF fic - lord knows I don't, beyond "they're all robots who can transform into cars and other things, and the fandom has multiple different established ways of writing robot sex". XD For the Skyrim fic, I don't think you need to either, but since I've played at least some of that I can't say so with the same certainty as with TF.

Summary: Dragons may signify the world's end but as far as Elisif's concerned, her world ended well before that when Ulfric Stormcloak murdered her husband. So it is that no one's more surprised than her when a dragon attack on Solitude reveals that there's more to the High Queen in waiting than anyone suspected.

I love how this fleshes out Elisif into someone truly badass, who learns to handle her grief also handle dragons. Like a badass. Though it benefits from canon knowledge, I think it works perfectly well as an essentially original adventure story, especially if you like intimidated, helpless ladies learning to be badass ladies, and relationships involving rather sweet femdom.

Cicero Dragonborn (696,029 words) by

Same author and fandom as the one above, same absolutely fantastic writing. The premise is: what if Cicero, a cold-blooded assassin, had become the Dragonborn, hero of Skyrim? Despite the male main character, this is another series that features a plethora of awesome female leads as well as some very hot and rather less sweet femdom. The last fic in the series is incomplete, but the other fics are each completed with no lose ends, and the WIP ends at a decently satisfying point as well. Another fic that I think stands reasonably well on its own. Read this if you like badass ladies, unlikely heroes, serial killers, and hardcore BDSM. Don't read this if you don't like gore, torture, and merciless killing. (But if those sound like positives rather than negatives, definitely definitely give this a try!)

My next rec is a series, but I'm picking out two fics I especially enjoyed (and encouraging you to read the rest as well).
